Do it scared!

My mom always told me that sometimes being brave means being scared and doing it anyway. My dad’s approach was something like – when you get bucked off, you get right back in the saddle. Well folks, I’m here to tell you I’ve decided to publish some of the poems I’ve written over the years – since I was about 10 years old – and share them in a book. I’ve wanted to put them in a bound book for many years, but have been afraid to do it – and therefore found lots of excuses as to why it couldn’t be done. Technology has made publishing your own book very easy – no one even has to like it to get it published! So that’s one hurdle to overcome – the next was to simply put it all out there. The impetus behind this endeavor is the upcoming birth of a baby girl, Karlee, who will make my childhood best friend and a true cowgirl buckaroo, Cassie Jo, a grandma. The baby shower invitation asked guests to bring a book to give to her. Well, I thought, what kind of books did I like to read? I grew up reading greats like ‘Where the Red Fern Grows’ and ‘Summer of the Monkeys’ and of course, lots of Baby Sitter’s Club and Louis L’Amour, but for her, I wanted something more person. I wanted Karlee to know what the west was like years ago – to help her to feel the same way I feel about Nevada and growing up in the country. So for you, Karlee girl, I’m doing it scared!
